The Apostolic Palace of Castel Gandolfo, Palazzo Apostolico di Castel Gandolfo, in Italian, coexists with green Italian-style gardens and other pontifical buildings - such as the Villa Barberini or the Villa Cybo -, totaling 55 hectares in area. All these spaces can be visited as a museum, since Pope Francis decided to open them to the public in 2016, after centuries of uninterrupted private use by a total of 15 popes.

Affectionately referred to as "Vatican number two" by Pope John Paul II, the pontifical summer residence of Castel Gandolfo is both a jewel of Rome's history and a great unknown.
